Prostate cancer has been winning the race for some time now. This year alone 28,000 men will die from this debilitating disease, but it doesn't have to keep winning. This year on Saturday, September 11, Memphis is hosting the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge. This national event is our chance to fight back against this silent killer; it is our chance to beat prostate cancer and win the race of life.
Without the help of Zero-The Project to end Prostate Cancer and The Conrad Pearson Clinic, this important and exciting Memphis event would not be possible. These two beneficiaries have helped bring prostate cancer awareness to the forefront and are hoping that the battle against prostate cancer can be won and that this disease can be eradicated in our lifetime.
Zero has partnered with The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge to become the primary beneficiary for this run. Zero has been fighting prostate cancer since 1996. In the 14 years that they have dedicated to battling cancer, they have made it possible for more than 100,000 men across the United States to receive free prostate cancer tests by increasing federal research capital by 500 percent. Also they were a large factor in a 40 percent drop in prostate cancer-related deaths across the nation. Zero believes that if we all come together to raise awareness and fight this disease we can drop prostate cancer-related deaths to zero.
Founded in 1996, The Conrad Pearson Clinic is the largest urology group in the Memphis area. They provide state-of-the-art treatment and facilities and are dedicated to improving the lives of the affected in the on-going battle of prostate cancer.
One of the most important attributes of this challenge, offered by The Conrad Pearson Clinic, is the possibility of qualifying for a free prostate cancer screening, conducted by on-site physicians. These screenings will be held on race day on a first-come, first-serve basis from 7:00 AM until 10:00 AM for all eligible men. Eligible men include men who have not been screened for prostate cancer within the last 12 months, and who are between the ages of 50 and 75 (African American men must be 40 or older to qualify), or have a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer.
So lace up those running shoes, power up that new run mix on your iPod, and join Memphis in a 5K run or in a one mile fun walk!
Are those bad knees hindering you from participating in the race? That's OK. You don't have to run or even do the fun walk to participate. This is an event for everyone who feels passionately about prostate cancer awareness. Feel free to come check out the live music and free food and beverages! There will also be a Kids Zone and some amazing giveaways.
The fight against prostate cancer is not a fight that needs to be fought alone. Come join ranks with everyone from AMC Theatres to Clif Bar to Bruegger's Bagels, and make a difference!
