Medical Technology... helping to save lives
John Smith, not his real name, of course, was out of town visiting relatives when he experienced a serious arrhythmia. Fortunately, he was wearing a heart monitor.
If John had been at home, the TELErhythmics nurse noticing the problem would have called him immediately. Knowing he couldn't be reached, John managed to call TELErhythmics, but before the nurse could complete the testing, John suddenly hung up. Using software called Oaisys Talkument, TELErhythmics traces the call within seconds, calls John back as well as dispatching an ambulance. At the same time, John's physician is notified and the triage nurse in the ER is given an update on John's condition before he even gets there.
This is just one example of how medical technology is helping to save lives.
TELErhythmics is a Memphis based company that provides 24-hour monitoring by experienced critical care RNs who have expertise in adult and pediatric electrophysiology. In addition, two board-certified cardiologists are on staff at all times. Nurses are able to assess symptoms and patient complaints such as chest pains and shortness of breath and provide appropriate notification to physicians 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. TELErhythmics has gained national recognition for providing the highest standard of cardiac diagnostic service.
Earlier this year, TELErhythmics employed Med Plus Solutions, a division of Business Computers of Memphis, to install and service Oaisys Talkument, a call recording and voice documentation software. Since its installation, Oaisys Talkument has helped TELErhythmics with more than 100,000 calls. Its state-of-the-art technology manages more than 250 tests a day as TELErhythmics assists cardiologists, neurologists and internal medical doctors in 11 states in the southeastern United States-- Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Florida, North and South Carolina, Texas, Georgia and Alabama.
"In the old days," says TELErhythmics CEO, Jan Callaway, "recorded calls could only be kept for 4-6 weeks, then they were gone. With this new technology, calls are saved forever!"
The software also is used by the billing department to help resolve in disputes involving the verification of benefits. Example: In a telephone conversation, an insurance rep tells the TELErhythmics billing department that they don't need an authorization. Later the insurance company demands authorization. Since the call was recorded with the Oaisys Talkument software, the conversation could be verified and the insurance company would have had to pay the claim.
Callaway says, "The Oaisys Talkument software is invaluable – we use it everywhere from staff training to the clinical management and work flow," says Callaway, who also uses the software to investigate and respond to patient survey feedback. "We can track calls and train our staff accordingly. Qualify and quantify."
Choosing the right company to install and service this important software was an important decision for TELErhythmics. When asked about working with Med Plus Solutions, Callaway responded, "This is part of my business philosophy: the true test of how good a company is, is how they respond when something goes wrong. With us, it involves life and death. Med Plus Solutions has been excellent to work with!"
