St. Jude To Support State-Of-The-Art Operating Rooms At Le Bonheur For Brain Tumor Patients

To ensure world-class facilities for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital brain tumor patients, the Board of Governors of St. Jude and the Board of Directors of ALSAC have approved a $7 million investment to provide state-of-the-art neurosurgical facilities at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center.

The investment will go toward developing LeBonheur's new neurosurgical operating room suites and clinical facilities associated with post-operative, intensive care which will be located in the new Le Bonheur hospital scheduled to open in 2010. Neurosurgery of St. Jude's brain tumor patients has been performed at LeBonheur since the beginning of the St. Jude brain tumor program, which is currently the largest research-based pediatric brain tumor program in the United States. St. Jude's support of the construction of these new facilities is proportional to St. Jude's utilization of the facilities. The investment will also allow state-of-the-art intra-operative imaging equipment (iMRI) to be installed in these new operating rooms.

The new neurosurgical facility at Le Bonheur will allow surgeons to have access to live Web casting capabilities during surgical procedures. The new facility will also provide surgeons with direct access to an iMRI that will allow imaging during brain tumor operations. Only two neurosurgical operating rooms in the United States currently have this capability.

Along with the iMRI, four beds of Le Bonheur's new pediatric intensive care unit will be dedicated to the post-operative care of neurosurgery patients. The new Le Bonheur will also have a 24-bed patient floor for patients recovering from neurosurgery or those receiving neurological treatment.

The investment by St. Jude advances Le Bonheur's capital campaign to fund the $327 million new hospital slated to be completed in 2010.

Summer Duathlon Turns into Holiday Cheer For Family Cancer Center's Support Group

The hundreds of people who ran and biked in September's annual Los Locos Duathlon now are bringing holiday cheer to the Circle of Life, the support group of the Family Cancer Center.

A check for $1,653 was presented by representatives of the Los Locos Duathlon to the Circle of Life, a not-for-profit support group of the Family Cancer Center Foundation. The money was raised by the athletes and sponsors of the event.

The Circle of Life provides strength, understanding and education for both Family Cancer Center patients and their family members.

Race organizers selected the Circle of Life as the recipient of its funds after developing a strong relationship with Dr. Earle Weeks, a physician and founder of the Family Cancer Center.

The 2008 Los Locos Duathlon consisted of a two mile run, a 15-mile bike course and another two-mile run. Los Locos also sponsored a one-mile kid's fun run for participants 12 and younger. Individuals as well as relay teams were welcome to participate. And while most racers said the day provided fun and rigorous activity, the race obviously provided much more.

The Circle of Life, now in its fifth year, meets once a month at the Collierville location to further cancer education and provide support for patients and their families. The money donated by Los Locos already is being put to good use. A portion of the proceeds will provide Christmas dinners for patients and their families. The reminder of the money will be used to help purchase supplies such as wigs, wheelchairs and walkers for patients.

Many Tennesseans May Be Unknowingly Addicted to Pain Medication

Thousands of Tennesseans may be addicted to a prescription pain medication that is probably no more effective than over-the-counter pain relievers.

Propoxyphene (pro-POX-ih-feen), the active ingredient in Darvon, Darvocet and many generic pain medications, has been prescribed to patients in Tennessee since 1957. However, recent Medicare data shows that 55 percent of all medications prescribed in the state that pose a potential threat to patients are due to one drug — Darvocet N-100 — which contains 100 milligrams of propoxyphene.

A recent study suggests that physicians are used to prescribing the older drugs and may not be aware of the risks.

QSource has been tasked by Medicare to reduce the rate of drug-to-drug interactions and the prescribing of potentially inappropriate medications in people 65 and older.

Reducing the use of inappropriate medications and drug interactions are both factors in lowering the number of medication errors that occur in the United States. Older adults, especially low-income seniors living at home, are seven times more vulnerable to medication errors than any other age group.
