SPINOUT AT GRACELAND!


Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc., The MED Foundation, and the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center announce a special Spinout Rally and Unveiling of the new official Tennessee Elvis Presley License Plate benefiting The MED Foundation.

Classic cars from around the Mid-South will rally at The MED's Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center at 877 Jefferson Avenue, 8AM - 9AM on Tuesday morning, February 5th.

At 9:15AM, the Spinout Rally will caravan to Graceland at 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard, escorted by the Shelby County Sheriffs Department.  The classic cars will then be led through the grounds of Graceland and park along the front drive.

Officials from Graceland, The MED, the State of Tennessee, Shelby County and Memphis, along with those responsible for the development of the Elvis Presley License Plate, classic car rally participants and a few lucky Elvis fans will assemble at the steps of historic Graceland.

At 10:00AM, the new official Tennessee license plate featuring Elvis Presley, the King of Rock‘n’Roll, and the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center will be unveiled in front of the Graceland Mansion. The license plate will then be placed on the first Rolls Royce ever owned by Elvis. This Rolls Royce Phantom V was custom made for Elvis in 1960 and is being made available for this event courtesy of Graceland Archives and Elvis’ Automobile Museum.

This official "artist proof" plate, license number (EP)0000, is being donated to the Graceland Archives and will become a permanent part of their collection.  We will have a very special announcement about the other official "artist proof" plate, license number 00000.

A portion of the proceeds from all Elvis Presley License Plate sales goes directly to support the wonderful lifesaving work done by The Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center and The MED Foundation.  The Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center is this region's only Level-1 trauma center and has served the trauma emergency needs of a 5-state, 150 mile radius from Memphis, TN. for 25 years.

The Elvis License Plates are now being distributed to those that have pre-ordered them and will soon be available throughout Tennessee at your local county offices and by mail order.

In the event of inclement weather, the classic car procession will be cancelled, and the Elvis License Plate will be unveiled at Elvis’ Automobile Museum, directly across from Graceland at 10:00AM.

 


West Clinic Cited by the Institute of Medicine for Being a Positive Example of How Psychosocial Needs of Cancer Patients Are Being Met

MEMPHIS — A new Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Cancer Care from the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs, was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) January 29, 2008. In the report, the IOM proposes a new standard of care calling all cancer care providers to ensure that patients receive needed psychosocial services. The IOM’s proposed standard calls for clinicians to provide screening for psychosocial needs; link patient with support services; coordinate, monitor, and follow-up on care received.

Methodist Purchases Carvel Imaging Centers In Mississippi

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare has entered into an agreement with Carvel Imaging to purchase its centers in Southaven and Olive Branch, Miss. effective February 18, 2008. The arrangement will be a joint venture between Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and Memphis Radiological Professional Corp.

“Carvel Imaging has a great reputation in the communities it serves,” said Mitch Graves, President, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare’s Affiliated Services Division. “We want to continue that high level of customer service.”

Dr. Lynn Carvel said she’s proud to be able to enter into an agreement with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare.

“This will be a tremendous plus for the citizens and employers of North Mississippi, and I know that our patients and the physicians who refer to us will be in great hands,” she said.

Methodist is increasing its presence in North Mississippi, having recently announced a March opening for a minor medical center for adults, an urgent care center for children and a sleep disorders center at 5580 Goodman Road in Olive Branch.




Tennessee Gets Top Marks For Preparedness For Public Health Emergencies

NASHVILLE — Tennessee has achieved 10 out of 10 possible indicators of preparedness to respond to public health emergencies, according to “Ready or Not? Protecting the Public’s Health from Disease, Disasters and Bioterrorism,” a new report issued today from the Trust for America’s Health. Tennessee is one of only seven states with a top score in this national assessment.

The TFAH report contains scores for all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on 10 key indicators to assess health emergency preparedness capabilities. States received one point for each indicator they achieved. These indicators include having plans to distribute emergency vaccines and medical supplies, having sufficient capabilities to test for biological threats, and maintaining or increasing funding levels for public health services.



West Tennessee Healthcare Announces Discover Nursing Careers Opportunity

JACKSON — West Tennessee Healthcare offers a glimpse at a nursing career at Discover Nursing Careers. This day-and-a-half event is for people age 21 and older who have always wanted to be a nurse but haven’t yet gotten started. This experience provides educational information on job-shadowing to assist in making the decision to become a nurse. The session will be February 7 and 8. Cost is $35 per person, however there is grant funding available for eligible participants.

“It is not too late to consider a new career,” said Recruiter Jan Williams, RN. “This program can help a person decide if nursing is the right thing.”

Dr. Lee Carter Installed as 2008 President of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians

GATLINBURG — Dr. Lee Carter, Huntingdon, Tennessee, was recently installed as 2008 President of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) at the TAFP’s 59th Annual Scientific Assembly held in Gatlinburg.

Carter is in private Family Medicine practice in Huntingdon. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Memphis and completed the St. Francis Hospital Family Medicine Residency and the Obstetrics and Advanced Women’s Health Fellowship at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.



John Yarbrough Named Outstanding Alumnus

JACKSON — John Yarbrough, physical therapist and executive director of West Tennessee Rehabilitation Center in Jackson, was recently named one of “35 Outstanding Alumni” by the University Of Tennessee College Of Allied Health Sciences in Memphis. The university chose its 35th anniversary to honor 35 alumni who have represented the college and university as leaders in the allied health professions. According to Interim Dean William R. Frey, these graduates “have made a difference in their communities, locally and globally.”

Yarbrough graduated from the university’s physical therapy program in 1973. He has held numerous positions in the Tennessee Physical Therapy Association (TPTA), including president from 1996 to 2000.



Pathways Behavioral Health Services Awarded Accreditation from the Joint Commission

JACKSON — By demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for healthcare quality and safety, Pathways Behavioral Health Services has earned the Joint Commission’s gold Seal of ApprovalTM.

The Joint Commission conducted an unannounced, on-site evaluation of Pathways Behavioral Health Services in November. The accreditation award recognizes Pathways’ dedication to complying with the Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards on a continuous basis.


Hobart Beale, M.D., “2007 Family Physician of the Year Award”

GATLINBURG — Dr. Hobart Beale, of Martin, Tennessee, was the recipient of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians’ (TAFP) “2007 Family Physician of the Year Award” recently at the TAFP’s 59th Annual Scientific Assembly held in Gatlinburg.

The TAFP’s Family Physician of the Year Award is bestowed upon an individual who exemplifies the ideal Family Physician, who has made an outstanding contribution to Family Medicine and to the advancement of health and/or medical training and medical education.

Beale received his medical degree from UT Memphis and completed an internship at Tampa General Hospital.

After 30 years of private practice, he retired and joined the UT Family Medicine Residency as part-time faculty, where he has won the Excellence in Teaching Award three separate times.


Primary Care Practice Opens Doors To Bartlett Community

BARTLETT — Apex Primary Health Care, a new primary care medical practice located at 7625 Hwy. 64 in Bartlett, opened for business Jan. 14.

The physician leading the new practice, Dr. Marcus Reeves, recently moved to Memphis and cites Bartlett’s diverse demographics and potential for growth as reasons for his decision to establish a business there.

Reeves is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, Miss. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., followed by the completion of his residency training in family medicine at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He has served as an assistant professor of family medicine at the UAB-Huntsville Campus, where he received several awards for his clinical and teaching excellence.


Dr. Kelly Blair Achieves Fellow Status

JACKSON — Dr. Kelly Blair was recently elected to Fellow status in the National Academy of Neuropsychology.

Blair completed his Doctor of Psychology degree at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, his pre-doctoral internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center, and his post-doctoral fellowship at Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation in Chattanooga, Tennessee.


Methodist University Hospital Thoracic Surgeon Published in National Journal

MEMPHIS — Dr. Glenn Phillip Schoettle, Jr., thoracic surgeon at Methodist University Hospital and assistant professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, co-authored an article that was published in the journal Innovations: Technology & Techniques in Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, the official journal of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Dr. Schoettle’s article, Hand-Sewn Proximal Anastomoses in Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Without the Need for Partial Occlusion Clamping: Experience With the Heartstring II Proximal Seal System, examines the Heartstring II Proximal Seal System (HPSS) as it relates to off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.


Dr. Steven J. Bares Named Interim Director for School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center

MEMPHIS — Steve J. Schwab, MD, executive dean and Memphis campus dean for the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, has named Dr. Steven J. Bares interim director for the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging (BME&I). The recently elevated School of BME&I was previously a department in the College of Medicine (COM) on the Memphis campus of UT Health Science Center (UTHSC).

As interim director of the school, Dr. Bares will oversee nine faculty members and an average of 25 graduate students enrolled per semester. He will report directly to Dr. Schwab.

While serving as interim director, Dr. Bares will continue in his position as president and executive director of the Memphis Bioworks Foundation.

Dr. Bares holds a PhD in physical chemistry, an MBA, and a BS in chemistry. He has authored nine patents, and has published numerous articles. He is also the co-founder of the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering, Tennessee’s first charter school.


New Chief Medical Officer Joins Germantown Hospital

GERMANTOWN — Dr. George G. Mayzell has joined Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital as chief medical officer. Dr. Mayzell recently moved to Memphis from Jacksonville, Fla., where he served as senior medical director of patient management effectiveness for Shands HealthCare, a 9-hospital system integrated with the University of Florida College of Medicine.

Dr. Mayzell received a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey and completed his residency at the University of South Florida in the field of internal medicine. In addition, Mayzell earned a MBA from Jacksonville University.


Hershel P. Wall, MD, Appointed Chancellor, Ken Brown Appointed Executive Vice Chancellor for The University of Tennessee Health Science Center

MEMPHIS — Recently, UT President John Petersen announced plans to immediately remove the interim title designation for both Dr. Hershel “Pat” Wall and Dr. Ken Brown. Since mid-April 2007, Dr. Wall has served as interim chancellor and vice president for Health Affairs, while Dr. Brown has served as chief of staff and interim executive vice chancellor for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).

Pending board approval, Dr. Wall will carry the title of chancellor and its full responsibilities until a new permanent chancellor is hired. Dr. Brown will immediately function full time as the permanent executive vice chancellor and continue in his role as chief of staff.

Prior to accepting the role as interim chancellor, Dr. Wall was a professor and executive associate dean for admissions and student affairs. He had served as interim dean for the UTHSC College of Medicine, Memphis, from November 2005 to April 2007. Dr. Wall is a 1960 graduate of the UT College of Medicine, Memphis campus.

UT Medical Group is the Memphis area’s largest physician practice with over 340 providers, all of whom are qualified to teach on the faculty of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine.

The Best Doctors in America database is widely regarded as a high-quality reference guide to the medical profession. The list is based on an exhaustive survey of currently listed Best Doctors specialists who are asked to rate the clinical abilities of their peers. Participants are asked, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?” Specialists complete ballots on other doctors in their own and in related specialties. They may also nominate other physicians who they think should be included in the review process.

Best Doctors, Inc. does not accept compensation from physicians or hospitals in return for listing doctors in its database, nor does it pay doctors to participate in the survey.


Methodist South Hospital Offers No Appointment Necessary Screening

MEMPHIS — Methodist South Hospital is making it easier than ever to get a screening mammogram. This past summer the hospital began offering no appointment necessary mammograms. Since then, physicians have sent more than 250 patients to Methodist South to take advantage of the convenience of having this important diagnostic procedure performed without having to schedule an appointment in advance.

Screening mammography is a low dose X-ray examination consisting of two views of each breast and is for patients who do not have physical breast cancer symptoms following self exams. The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes and is performed by a registered radiologic technologist. The ACS recommends women age 40 and older get a mammogram every year. Screening mammograms are performed at the Methodist Diagnostic Center located within Methodist South Hospital. Mammograms are performed Monday thru Friday from 8 am - 5 pm. Patients should check-in at the outpatient registration desk located on the first floor. A physician referral is needed.


West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation Reaches $3.8 Million in Donations for 2007

JACKSON — Completing its annual audit, numbers show that the West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation received $3.8 million in gifts in 2007. The audit was performed by Fancher Sargent of Cowart, Sargent, and Webb. Gifts made to the Foundation are distributed throughout the more than 300 of the Foundation’s funds. Each Fund has an advisory board for that fund that is charged with directing the distribution of money in the fund and raising money for the fund.

Much of the $3.8 million was raised for Ayers Children’s Medical Center, the Health and Healing Clinic, and other projects like services for cancer and hospital patients, a grief camp for children, Dianne Odell, and Gabriel’s Garden, an inclusive playground. “The Foundation’s mission is to provide healing within the community,” said Foundation Board Chairman Ed Graves. “$2.3 million of the funds was put directly back into the community. The remaining $1.5 million was earmarked by donors for endowment funds,” said McMeen.


Methodist North Hospital Names New Chief Financial Officer

MEMPHIS — Kevin Todd has been named chief financial officer (CFO) for Methodist North Hospital. Todd joined Methodist Healthcare in

1996 and has held positions in corporate accounting and financial analysis. He served as director of Finance at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center from 2002-2005 before being named CFO of Methodist South Hospital in 2005.

Todd earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Union University in Jackson, Tenn. He received his master’s degree of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Memphis.

He will begin his new position in February 2008 and will report directly to William Kenley, administrator and vice president of Methodist North Hospital.
