David L. Maness, DO, MSS, FAAFP Named Chairman, Department of Family Medicine College of Medicine, Memphis a University of Tennessee Health Science Center Campus

Steve J. Schwab, MD, executive dean of the College of Medicine for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), has announced the appointment of David L. Maness, DO, MSS, FAAFP, as chairman for the Department of Family Medicine. The department is in the College of Medicine, Memphis, one of three College of Medicine campuses that are part of the UT Health Science Center.

Dr. Maness currently serves in a major academic and graduate medical education role as the dean, Academy of Health Sciences at the Army Medical Department Center and School at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Trezevant Hires New COO

Trezevant announces that Charley Tirrell will serve as the organization’s new Chief Operating Officer, reporting directly to Trezevant’s Chief Executive Officer, John Webb.

Prior to this position, Charley served as Director of Trezevant’s Allen Morgan Health Center. This change in corporate structure is designed to prepare for Trezevant’s expanded operations. Trezevant is undergoing an $80 million dollar expansion which will double the size of their existing facility.

Leading Health Care Attorney Joins St. Jude As Chief Administrative Officer

Mark Barnes, one of the nation’s leading attorneys in research and regulatory compliance, has joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as its new chief administrative officer and executive vice president.

Barnes, formerly a partner at Ropes & Gray in New York, has practiced and taught law as well as administered government programs in the health care field for the past 20 years.

The West Clinic Welcomes G. Gary Tian, MD, PhD

The West Clinic is pleased to welcome Gary Tian, MD, PhD. Board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine.

Dr. Tian began his high education at Peking University, Peking P.R. China where he received his B.S. in Pre-Med Sciences. He studied gene regulation in carcinogenesis and earned his Masters Degree in Biochemistry from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Dr. Tian continued his research at Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts and was awarded Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology.

After earning his MD, Dr. Tian completed his internship and residency in Internal medicine at The St. Vincent Catholic Medical Centers in Queens, New York. His oncology/hematology fellowship was completed at University of Maryland, Medical Center.


Baptist Foundation Presents Award To Dr. Richard DeSaussure

The Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation recently presented Dr. Richard L. DeSaussure Jr. with its Award of Distinction for Emeritus Physicians.

The award honors physicians who have exhibited excellence in patient care as well as service to the community and includes the establishment of a named endowment to benefit medical education, research and patient care initiatives. The DeSaussure Endowment will support the DeSaussure Lecture Series and the Richard L. DeSaussure Jr., M.D., Excellence in Neurosurgery Award, which provides continuing education opportunities for neurosurgical residents.

Memphis Health Center Gets $500,000 Grant For Obstetric Services

A $500,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Health will help Memphis Health Center, Inc. improve pregnant women’s access to timely prenatal care and reduce infant mortality. Memphis Health Center, a non-profit provider of primary health care, will use the grant to expand the provision of obstetrical and gynecological services.

With the grant, Memphis Health Center can improve outreach to pregnant women and provide early and ongoing care to mother and child before and after delivery. The funds will enable the center to add a nurse case manager, support staff, ultrasound equipment, a fetal monitor and other equipment.

UT Health Science Center, BlueCross Extend Collaboration on Blues Project

The UT Health Science Center and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee have extended their collaboration on The Blues Project, a clinic- and home-based social intervention program, to positively affect health outcomes for at-risk mothers and their babies. Open enrollment begins for Phase II of The Blues Project in mid-August. The initiative is designed to help improve maternal, fetal and pediatric outcomes in Memphis through education, employment and removing social barriers linked to adverse child health outcomes. The project is beginning the third year of a four-year pilot.

The three clinic locations for Phase II of The Blues Project are: Christ Community Health Services sites at 3362 S. Third Street and at 3124 N. Thomas in Frayser, and the Memphis Health Center at 360 E. H. Crump Boulevard. The study is administered by UTHSC and UT Medical Group Inc. (UTMG)

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee funded Phase I of the project, May 2004 through December 2006, through corporate contributions with $1.7 million over two years. Phase II will be funded by the company’s Tennessee Health Foundation (THF) with $681,000 over three years.

Gabor Tigyi MD, PhD, Named Chairman, Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine, Memphis, a University of Tennessee Health Science Center Campus

Steve J. Schwab, MD, executive dean of the College of Medicine for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), has announced the appointment of Gabor Tigyi, MD, PhD, as chairman for the Department of Physiology in the College of Medicine, Memphis, one of three College of Medicine campuses that are part of the UTHSC.

Dr. Tigyi is a 15-year veteran of UTHSC, joining the faculty of the Department of Physiology in 1992. His research focuses on a group of lipid mediators involved as causative agents in human diseases including atherosclerosis, thrombosis, tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. Since his arrival at UTHSC, he has been continuously funded by multiple research grants and is currently the principal investigator of three National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants and a Department of Defense grant, as well as co-principal investigator on two other NIH grants.

Dr. Tigyi is internationally recognized for his research and holds a visiting professorship at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. In 1984, he was elected to the 200 member Hungarian Academy of Sciences as a Foreign Member.

Junior Achievement Names Mary Brooks Vice President of Programs

Mary Brooks has been named Vice President of Programs for Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South.

Prior to this promotion, Mary served as Director of Programs for JA, overseeing the volunteers and K-12 in-school programming. In her new duties, Mary will also oversee the operation of Exchange City, Junior Achievement’s model city, run for a day by area 5th graders.

Stroke Coordinator Named for Methodist Healthcare Neuroscience Institute

DeAnna Brown, RN, has accepted the position of stroke coordinator for the Methodist Healthcare Neuroscience Institute.

Smith has been with Methodist since 2002 and has held a variety of positions in the Methodist Healthcare Transplant Institute including pre-transplant clinical coordinator, patient care coordinator and most recently clinical director.

Novick Awarded Passion Award

William Novick, MD, professor of surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine, was awarded the International Children’s Heart Foundation Frederique Constant Passion Award in Geneva,

Switzerland last week. The award is presented annually to recognize the most passionate entrepreneur who has successfully developed an international business.
